Summer Olympics – Profiles of Top Medalists From 2008

The fencing competition which was held in the year 2008 at the Olympics had 10 gold medal winners, including individual and team events. The competitions were all held in single elimination events in the fencing activities of foil, epee and saber. The different championships were men’s team epee, women’s individual sabre, women’s individual epee, women’s team foil, women’s individual foil, men’s individual foil, men’s individual sabre, women’s team sabre, men’s individual epee, and men’s team sabre. Xue Tan

• Her age is 25, stands at a height of 5’9”, weighs 77 kg and she represents China.
• Tan was a representative of the Communist Party for a span of 5 years.
• She began fencing in the year 1998, when she was chosen for the track and field team at TianjinSportsEducationSchool.
• The next year, she entered the national sabre championship. She grabbed her first world championship in 2002.
• In 2004, in the women’s Olympic sabre match, she won against U.S’s then #1, Sada Jacobson. She was defeated by Mariel Zagunis of US.
• Tan brought home to China, its first medal in fencing since 1992, by winning the second position.
• The World’s Championships at St. Petersburg saw her finishing as runners up again.
• In 2008, she supported her team in the women’s team sabre event to bag the second position.

Mariel Zagunis

• She is 24 years old, stands 5’8” tall and weighs 73 kg.
• She represents the United States of America .
• In the year 2004, she won the first gold medal for U.S. in Olympics in more than a century.
• She is the sole U.S. fencer to bag the Junior World Cup title more than once, consecutively from 2002 – 2004.
• Mariel won the Olympic gold in the women’s individual sabre event.
• She won the Junior, Cadet and Junior team women’s sabre which made her the first fencer in the sports history to have more than two World Championship titles in the same season in 2001.
• Mariel ranked fifth in 2007 World Championships.
• She emerged as a winner at 2006 World cup event for Women’s Sabre.
